Have you always wanted to play a percussion instrument but don't dare? Do you like playing the drum as much as others like to belly dance? Darbuka, cajon, bendir, you've heard them all before, but how are women supposed to play them?
In our new percussion group course for women by Virginia Elif, you will learn the most important rhythms of the Middle East: Turkish, Kurdish, Arabic, Greek, Azeri, Iranian.
Belly dance rhythms are also covered in particular: Baladi, Maqsum and Saidi.
An overview of rhythm theory will be given so that you can of course delve into other areas after the course. The most important thing is to have fun and learn something in the process.
Each week a different groove will be covered (called Usul in Turkish) and a song will always be used as an example for practising. After the lessons, participants can make videos of what they have learnt so that they can practise at home.
It is recommended to practise at least once or twice a week - then success is guaranteed.
Each groove is part of a composition that we will build together: in the end you will be able to accompany both pop and classical music from the Middle East and even do a few solos.
This course is specifically open to women only, as it is intended as a safe space for women and people of all ages who are recognised as women to develop in the best possible way.
The rhythms in this course are mainly played on the darbuka (also called dohollo, dumbeleki or darbooka).
If you don't have a darbuka, please let us know and we will provide you with a basic set. If you prefer to have your own darbuka, we can order one for you.
Haydi, we look forward to seeing you!
